Department of Conservation biodiversity manager in Greymouth, Brad Edwards, said the death, and at least two other reported penguin deaths, had been caused by a dog or dogs.

Trust Coordinator, Inger Perkins said:

“The beach is certainly for sharing between dogs and penguins but dogs need to be under control on the beach, ideally on a lead.”
“We believe a lot of the problem stems from dogs being allowed to roam free, so owners do need to ensure they contain their dogs on their property to protect the penguins.”
