Finding the balance – have your say on the RPS

WCRC have your say graphicThe West Coast Blue Penguin Trust was created in 2006 by West Coasters concerned at the level of seemingly unfettered coastal development.  Now, there is more understanding of the coastal environment and seabird habitat by local authorities, developers and the general public.  However, concern is being expressed by environmentalists as the West Coast Regional Council is proposing more use and development of the Coast’s natural resources in its Regional Policy Statement Review discussion document.

The emphasis of the changes proposed for the new RPS is on promoting (a) positive effects (jobs, economic growth and population growth) for the region and (b) sustainable communities, particularly through increased mineral extraction.  Coasters have until 5pm on 17th January 2014 to make submissions on the proposed additions to the existing regionally significant issues, which include coastal environment, freshwater, habitats, landscapes, soils, rivers, air quality and natural hazards..

The discussion document and information as to how to provide feedback (by email or post) is available here: WCRC Regional Policy Statement Review.
