After years of planning and talks, construction of a fence which will cover 2.3km of the Coast Road started last week on a corner that has claimed the lives of dozens of blue penguins.
The fence will restrict penguins to the safe area below the road, where there are plenty of old burrows waiting for them to move in during late July. You can read more about the project here: Penguin fence project
Fencer John McLaren and Ranger Reuben received instructions from local resident Reef in the finer points of erecting the penguin proof mesh along the barrier arm, for example, burying part of the fencing mesh so that penguins cannot squeeze under it.
